Five Skills You Can Build Before Anyone Gives You a Management Title
Leadership behavior is available immediately. The title is a separate conversation, and this is not a promotion roadmap.

Field Notes
Forge Columbus perspective
To be clear at the start: practicing these does not guarantee a promotion. Promotions depend on business need, timing, and openings. What these do is make you more capable, which is portable in a way a title is not.
Communication. Say the difficult thing early and plainly. Most workplace problems are late messages, not hard messages.
Accountability. Report your own numbers before you are asked, including the bad ones. Trust is built almost entirely here.
Coaching. Help a newer teammate with something specific rather than something general. Explaining a process is the fastest way to find the holes in your own understanding.
Problem solving. Bring a proposed answer with the problem. Not a finished answer — a starting point that shows you thought about it.
Leadership behavior. Set the standard on the small things nobody is checking: preparation, punctuality, tone on a rough day.
None of these require permission. All of them are visible. And all of them keep working in whatever room you walk into next.
